Community Sustainable Actions (COMMSA)
Background
Community Sustainable Actions (COMMSA) is a registered grassroots-driven NGO based in Juba, South Sudan, established in April 2025. COMMSA is committed to promoting sustainable development, environmental conservation, and community empowerment. The organization operates with the conviction that true and lasting change begins at the community level, where people are equipped with knowledge, tools, and resources to address their challenges and unlock their potential.
Since inception, COMMSA has worked with local communities, government agencies, and development partners to deliver inclusive, practical, and community-led initiatives. The organization builds on informal community engagements carried out prior to registration, now scaling interventions to align with national development priorities and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Theory of Change
CommSA believes that empowering communities with knowledge, skills, and resources creates agency, strengthens resilience, and fosters equity. By focusing on local ownership, inclusivity, and innovation, CommSA’s interventions generate long-term sustainable solutions. Change is achieved when communities are active participants—not passive recipients—in addressing poverty, conflict, and environmental degradation.

COMMSA has been a life-changing partner for us. Since they drilled boreholes and built safe sanitation facilities, we finally have clean water, and waterborne diseases have reduced. Their support for women is amazing — the tailoring and entrepreneurship training helped many of us start small businesses and gain financial independence. As people living with disabilities, we feel seen and respected; COMMSA made our health centers accessible and trained us in new skills so we can earn an income. We’ve also learned how to care for our environment through tree planting, climate-smart farming, and waste management. Our land is greener, and we are better prepared for floods and droughts. Their peacebuilding and governance sessions have taught us how to resolve conflicts peacefully and work hand in hand with neighbors and local leaders. Most importantly, COMMSA’s maternal and child health programs are saving lives. Mothers get proper care, babies are vaccinated, and nutrition education keeps our children healthy. COMMSA listens to us, involves us in decisions, and focuses on solutions that last. They give hope even when challenges like conflict, hunger, and climate shocks surround us.
