Challenges in South Sudan

South Sudan faces profound socio-economic and humanitarian challenges that directly shape COMMSA’s work. Over 9 million people (70% of the population) are estimated to need humanitarian assistance in 2025, largely due to conflict, displacement, and recurring climate shocks (OCHA 2025). Insecurity continues to disrupt livelihoods, displace populations, and limit access to essential services.

Food insecurity is at critical levels, with over 7 million people projected to face crisis or worse levels (IPC Phase 3+) of food insecurity. Floods and drought cycles have destroyed agricultural lands, exacerbating hunger and malnutrition. The prevalence of acute malnutrition among children under five remains among the highest globally, straining already weak health systems.

Basic services are underdeveloped: only 41% of the population has access to safe water, and less than 15% has access to improved sanitation facilities. Maternal mortality and child mortality rates are among the highest in the world, compounded by poor infrastructure, shortages of health workers, and inadequate medical supplies. These challenges underscore the urgency of COMMSA’s interventions across its programmatic areas.
